Definition
A group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function in an organism.
Detailed Explanation
The four fundamental animal tissue types — epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous — combine in specific proportions to form every organ. Epithelial tissues form barriers and glands; connective tissues support and bind; muscle tissues move; nervous tissues communicate. Tissue organization is hierarchical: cells form tissues, tissues form organs, organs form systems. Cancer arises when tissue organization breaks down.
