Definition
An elongated, tubular mouthpart used by some insects for feeding on nectar, blood, or other liquids.
Detailed Explanation
Proboscis morphology coevolved tightly with floral structures — Darwin predicted that the Madagascar orchid Angraecum sesquipedale, with a 30 cm nectar spur, must have a pollinator with a 30 cm tongue; the hawk moth Xanthopan morganii praedicta was later discovered. Mosquito proboscises contain six stylets that saw and pierce skin while salivary canals inject anticoagulants. Butterflies taste with chemoreceptors on their feet before unfurling the proboscis.
