Definition
The single physical specimen designated as the name-bearing type when a species is formally described.
Detailed Explanation
The holotype is the anchor of species identity — without it, the species name becomes ambiguous. If a holotype is lost or destroyed, a neotype can be designated from additional specimens to stabilize nomenclature. Famous holotypes include the first Archaeopteryx specimen and the skull of Homo habilis. Neontologists and paleontologists follow strict international codes to ensure holotype designation is unambiguous.
