Definition
A young bird that has developed enough feathers to leave the nest but may still depend on parental care.
Detailed Explanation
Fledglings are especially vulnerable during their first days after nest departure — they cannot yet fly proficiently and must rapidly learn to find food, avoid predators, and navigate. Parental care continues post-fledging for days to weeks depending on species. First-year birds (after their first complete molt) have substantially higher mortality than adults, and most learning of foraging techniques and habitat preferences is consolidated during this period.
