Definition
A predatory method used by some snakes to subdue prey by coiling tightly around it, restricting breathing.
Detailed Explanation
Constricting snakes such as pythons and boas do not suffocate prey — research shows they stop blood circulation by compressing the circulatory system, causing cardiac arrest within seconds. Constriction pressure is calibrated to the prey's heartbeat and released only when the heart stops. This method is extremely efficient energetically and allows snakes to tackle prey far exceeding their own body mass. Large constricting snakes can swallow pigs, deer, and even alligators whole.
