Halorussus rarus is a halophilic archaeon in the family Halobacteriaceae, isolated from saline lake sediments in China. It is Gram-stain-negative by the standard test, pleomorphic, and requires high sodium chloride concentrations for optimal growth. Its genus, established in 2008, represents one of many specialist lineages adapted to hypersaline terrestrial environments.
