Zimtfarbene Breitfuß-Beutelmaus
The cinnamon antechinus (Antechinus leo) is a small marsupial in the family Dasyuridae, endemic to northeastern Queensland, Australia, particularly the Cape York Peninsula. It inhabits tropical and subtropical rainforest and forest margins at low elevations, sheltering in tree hollows, dense vine tangles, and fallen logs. Like all antechinuses, it is a specialist insectivore, consuming beetles, cockroaches, moths, and other invertebrates, and occasionally small lizards. The cinnamon antechinus is named for its rich cinnamon-brown dorsal fur. A remarkable feature shared by all antechinus species is semelparous reproduction: males undergo a catastrophic physiological decline and die shortly after a brief, intense mating season in winter, leaving only the pregnant females to carry the population into the next generation. This extreme reproductive strategy results in completely male-free populations for most of the year. The species is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, with populations within Cape York's relatively intact tropical forest. However, like all antechinuses, it faces threats from feral predators (cats and foxes), habitat degradation, and altered fire regimes. Climate change poses a long-term risk by shrinking the cool, moist forest habitats this species depends on. Genetic studies of Australian antechinuses have revealed considerable cryptic diversity.
Karthalabrillenvogel
<em>Zosterops mouroniensis</em>, the Comoro white-eye or Mount Karthala white-eye, is a small passerine bird in the family Zosteropidae endemic to the upper montane zone of Grande Comore in the Comoros archipelago. White-eyes of the genus Zosterops are among the most speciose bird genera in the Old World, characterised by the distinctive white feather ring encircling each eye. The Comoro white-eye is restricted to the forests and heath zones of Mount Karthala above approximately 1,500 metres elevation, representing one of the most range-restricted bird species in the Comoros. It typically inhabits montane forest, scrub, and heathland where it forages actively for insects, nectar, and small fruits in the canopy and understory. The IUCN classifies it as Vulnerable, reflecting its tiny range area concentrated on a single active volcano, which makes the entire population susceptible to eruptive events and associated habitat disturbance. Ongoing forest degradation on the upper slopes of Karthala further threatens the species. Biological traits including detailed body measurements, average lifespan, and reproductive parameters remain poorly documented in the scientific literature. The species likely behaves similarly to other Zosterops, forming active foraging flocks and playing a role in pollination and insect control within its montane habitat.
