Among the most acrobatic of the great whales, humpback whales are renowned for their complex, haunting songs sung by males during breeding season — some lasting hours and evolving over time. <em>Rousettus obliviosus</em>, the Comoro rousette, is a fruit bat in the family Pteropodidae endemic to the Comoros archipelago in the Indian Ocean, primarily recorded from Anjouan and Mohéli islands. As an Old World fruit bat, it plays an important ecological role in pollination and seed dispersal across the island's native forests. The species inhabits tropical moist lowland and montane forests, roosting in caves and dense vegetation. Its range is severely restricted by the small land area of the Comoros, making it inherently vulnerable to habitat loss. Deforestation driven by agricultural expansion and charcoal production has significantly reduced available forest cover on the islands. The IUCN classifies the Comoro rousette as Vulnerable, reflecting ongoing population pressures and limited geographic distribution. It is presumed to feed on fruits, nectar, and pollen typical of Old World fruit bats, though detailed dietary studies are limited.
