Anabaena birgei is a freshwater cyanobacterium in the family Nostocaceae, forming chains of vegetative cells interspersed with heterocysts that fix atmospheric nitrogen. It is planktonic in lakes and ponds, contributing to nitrogen input in oligotrophic to mesotrophic freshwater systems. Named after the limnologist Edward Asahel Birge, it is found in Northern Hemisphere temperate lakes.
