Common Diadem

<em>Hypolimnas misippus</em>, the common diadem, is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae with a broad distribution spanning tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Within the recorded range, it has been observed in Costa Rica, Malta, Portugal, Spain, and Taiwan, typically inhabiting tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests and their edges within the Neotropic realm. This species is notable for its striking sexual dimorphism: males display vivid iridescent blue-black wings with white spots, while females exhibit considerable variation, often mimicking the coloration and pattern of the unpalatable African monarch butterfly <em>Danaus chrysippus</em>. <em>Hypolimnas misippus</em> adults typically feed on flower nectar and are often encountered in forest clearings, gardens, and disturbed habitats. Larvae feed on plants in the family Convolvulaceae, among others. The species is assessed as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution and adaptability to a range of forested and semi-open environments.
