About

Lepidochitona cinerea, the cinereous chiton or ashy chiton, is a small marine mollusc in the class Polyplacophora, found along the rocky shores of the northeastern Atlantic and European coasts from Norway south to the Canary Islands and into the Mediterranean Sea. It inhabits intertidal and shallow subtidal zones, living beneath stones and in rock crevices from the upper intertidal down to several meters depth. The chiton has eight overlapping dorsal shell plates (valves) surrounded by a girdle—a characteristic feature of all chitons. Lepidochitona cinerea is typically 1–2 centimeters long, with variable gray to olive or brown coloration that provides camouflage on encrusted rock surfaces. It feeds by scraping algae, diatoms, and organic films from rock surfaces using a hard, iron-mineralized radula. The species is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN and is abundant throughout its European intertidal range. Chitons are among the most ancient lineages of molluscs, with a body plan that has remained largely unchanged for hundreds of millions of years. Lepidochitona cinerea is one of the most commonly encountered chitons in European marine biology courses and rock pool surveys. It has a northern distribution that legitimately includes Norway, making it one of the few species in this dataset with accurate Norwegian records.
