Definition
A geographic area where organisms survived periods of unfavorable conditions, such as glaciations.
Detailed Explanation
Glacial refugia in southern Europe (Iberian, Italian, and Balkan peninsulas) served as source populations from which temperate fauna and flora recolonized northern Europe after the last glacial maximum. Distinct genetic lineages in different refugia often represent cryptic species that diverged during glacial isolation. Identifying modern refugia — climate-stable areas where species may persist under climate change — is a conservation priority.
