Definition
One of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and occupy the same locus on a chromosome.
Detailed Explanation
Alleles arise by mutation and are maintained or eliminated by natural selection, genetic drift, and gene flow. A population can carry many alleles for the same gene — human ABO blood types, for instance, have three major alleles producing four blood groups. High allelic diversity at immune-related genes (like MHC) provides populations with broader resistance to pathogens, which is why inbred populations are more disease-susceptible.
