Melosira octogona is a filamentous, centric freshwater diatom forming long chains of cylindrical cells with octagonal cross-sections visible in girdle view. It inhabits benthic and planktonic zones in rivers, streams, and turbid freshwater environments across temperate regions. This photosynthetic diatom is common in riverine and turbid freshwater habitats.
