Distributed across Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, Sweden, and Ukraine. Currently classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, this species faces significant conservation challenges across its range.

Found across multiple habitat types including flooded grasslands and savannas, tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, and tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, among 5 distinct biome types spanning the Afrotropic and Indomalayan realms. Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.
Widely distributed across Africa (6 countries), Asia (7 countries), North America (5 countries), Oceania and the Pacific (11 countries), and South America (Brazil, Colombia).
