Sphingobacterium canadense is a Gram-negative, yellow-pigmented rod first isolated in Canada, as its species name suggests. It inhabits temperate soil and freshwater environments of northern North America. This aerobic chemoheterotroph decomposes organic matter in cool temperate terrestrial and aquatic habitats.

Sphingobacterium cladoniae is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium first isolated from the lichen Cladonia. It inhabits lichen thalli and associated substrates in temperate and boreal environments. This bacterium may play roles in nutrient cycling within the lichen microbiome, degrading organic compounds from algal and fungal lichen components.
