Anabaena thermophila is a thermophilic filamentous cyanobacterium capable of nitrogen fixation through specialised cells called heterocysts. Like other Anabaena species, it plays a significant role in nitrogen cycling in its habitat and can contribute to algal blooms under favorable conditions.
