Um beija-flor grande e distinto com bico excepcionalmente longo e reto, os machos do beija-flor-de-bico-comprido (Heliomaster longirostris) exibem uma gorjeta verde-iridescente marcante com uma proeminente mancha pós-ocular branca — a marca estelar que nomeia a espécie. Ocorre do México pela América Central até a América do Sul tropical a leste dos Andes, em altitudes de até 1.500 metros. Habitam bordas de floresta, clareiras e jardins, pousando conspicuamente em galhos expostos no topo das árvores — comportamento incomum para beija-flores que normalmente forrageiam em voo.
