Novosphingobium rhizosphaerae は、種名が示すとおり植物根圏環境と関連するグラム陰性の好気性桿菌である。温帯土壌における様々な植物の根圏に生息する。この化学有機栄養菌は植物根圏での根滲出物と有機物を分解し、植物の栄養と健康に影響を与える可能性がある。

Sphingomonas yunnanensis は中国雲南省の土壌から単離された Sphingomonadaceae 科のグラム陰性アルファプロテオバクテリアである。黄色素コロニーを形成し、外膜にグリコスフィンゴ脂質を含有するのがこの属の特徴である。Sphingomonas 種は土壌、淡水、植物表面に広く分布し、一部は複合芳香族化合物を分解できる。
