Rhodomonas abbreviata は Pyrenomonadaceae 科に属する光合成クリプト藻類鞭毛虫で、2本の不等長鞭毛と赤色を与える特徴的なフィコエリトリン色素を持つ小さく扁平な細胞が特徴である。海洋および汽水の沿岸水域に生息し、ナノ植物プランクトン群集に貢献する。この種のようなクリプト藻類は動物プランクトンや従属栄養原生生物の重要な食物源である。

Rhodomonas chrysoidea は Pyrenomonadaceae 科に属する黄褐色のクリプト藻類で、淡水生息地に生息する。紅藻類由来の葉緑体を持つ光合成性鞭毛虫で、プランクトン食物網において役割を果たす。保全状況は評価されていない。
