Porphyrobacter colymbiは淡水生息地から単離された好気性バクテリオクロロフィル含有グラム陰性細菌である。Porphyrobacter属のメンバーはバクテリオクロロフィルを用いて光エネルギーで栄養を補うことができる好気性嫌気光合成細菌である。この種は淡水水生生態系の炭素循環に貢献する。

Porphyrobacter tepidariusは種名（tepidariusはぬるいを意味する）が示すように高温での成長が可能な中等度好熱性好気性嫌気光合成細菌である。熱水または温暖な淡水生息地から単離されている。他のPorphyrobacter種と同様にバクテリオクロロフィルを含み、補助エネルギー源として光エネルギーを収穫できる。
