Chrysochromulina camella is a marine haptophyte microalga belonging to the genus Chrysochromulina within the family Prymnesiaceae. Cells are spherical to ovoid, biflagellate, and equipped with a haptonema of variable length used in capturing bacterial prey. The cell surface is ornamented with a layer of unmineralized organic scales whose shape and arrangement constitute important diagnostic features at the species level. C. camella is a component of the marine nanoplankton assemblage, occupying photic-zone waters where it participates in primary production and the microbial loop. The genus has been most thoroughly studied in the coastal waters of Scandinavia, where numerous species were first described by the Norwegian phycologist Parke and others during the mid-twentieth century.
