Sphacelaria tribuloides es un alga parda pequena y en mechones que forma colonias compactas en sustratos rocosos y sobre algas de mayor tamano. Habita zonas rocosas intermareales y submareales poco profundas en mares templados y tropicales de todo el mundo. Este alga fotosintizadora se reproduce mediante caracteristicos propulos en forma de estrella y coloniza superficies rocosas marinas.
