Psammothidium acidoclinatum es una pequena diatomea bentonica de agua dulce que se fija a sustratos acidos en lagos oligotroficos, turberas y arroyos de aguas blandas. Su pared celular silicica es claramente asimetrica, con valvas que facilitan la fijacion a granos de sedimento. Esta especie es un util bioindicador de la quimica del agua, especialmente la acidez, en estudios de ecologia de agua dulce.
