Cylindrotheca closterium es una diatomea alargada y acicular, marina y de aguas salobres, común en sedimentos costeros, llanuras intermareales y biopelículas bénticas de todo el mundo. Su frústulo de sílice en forma de huso se afina hasta puntas finas en ambos extremos. Esta especie es un importante productor primario en ecosistemas estuarinos y costeros someros y puede formar densas alfombras sobre superficies sedimentarias.
