Craterium leucocephalum es un mixomiceto que produce esporangios pediculados con forma de copa con distintivas tapas blancas, que crece en hojas muertas, corteza y restos vegetales en hábitats forestales húmedos y sombreados. Sus cuerpos fructíferos aparecen tras lluvias intensas cuando las condiciones favorecen la esporulación. Esta especie es cosmopolita en su distribución, encontrándose en bosques templados y tropicales de todo el mundo.
