Acanthocorbis asymmetrica es un coanoflagelado marino unicelular estrechamente emparentado con los ancestros de los animales, que habita aguas costeras y oceánicas abiertas. Sus células están envueltas en una lórica construida con tiras costales silíceas dispuestas en un patrón asimétrico, lo que la diferencia de especies relacionadas.
