Nitrosarchaeum limnae is a freshwater ammonia-oxidizing archaeon in the phylum Thaumarchaeota, isolated from the sediments of Lake Constance. It is chemolithoautotrophic, deriving energy from the oxidation of ammonia to nitrite and contributing significantly to nitrogen cycling in freshwater ecosystems. Its discovery highlighted that Thaumarchaeotal ammonia oxidizers are not restricted to marine environments.
